As an intern, time is the most important currency. Here, we present methods to prevent procrastination and optimize efficiency and empowerment.

  • Opportunity is always temporary. It must either seized or lost.

  • Leaders prepare to recognize opportunities. The person who wants to feel the warmth side of the sun stands on the south side of the tree- not the north side in the shade.

  • When people establish their own objectives, they are more committed to the achievement of those objectives.

  • Successful people are successful because they take time out to think.

Making Sense of Your Relationship with Time

Seize the small windows of ‘in-between’ time to maximize your productivity.

For example, an intern may find themselves scrolling Instagram during a 10-minute break between meetings. But what if they spent these 10 minutes drafting an email, scheduling a future meeting, or reviewing the work they have done?

Downtime in Internships

Here are some examples of when you will face downtime, when the small bits of time will add up to effect your productivity:

  • Commuting to and from work

  • Waiting for feedback after sending in work to managers.

  • Waiting for meetings to begin

How to Spend Downtime

During your internship, effectively plan on out what you will do during the downtime. We suggest:

  • reading industry articles

  • networking on LinkedIn or with colleagues

  • doing a quick mindfulness check-in

What other moments of downtime can you think about, and how will spend them effectively?
