Taming your Focus

Selective focus is the act of be aware of and obtaining the power to choose on what you spend your energy on.

This skill is necessary for ensuring that your experience results in personal growth.

  • Prioritize high-impact tasks and personal growth opportunities.

  • Limit distractions, actions without a high return on investment, and work that does not teach you anything.

  • Leave any non-work baggage out of your mind before work starts, so that your focus will exclusively be on empowerment throughout the internship.

We recommend that you resolve any personal hang-ups from your past so you can give full attention to your work.

Here is an exercise to help you:

  • On a piece of paper, write down any outside-of-work issues that may occur during your internship (e.g. personal finance worries, school conflicts).

  • Next to each issue, write a step-by-step plan on how to manage them.

  • Refer to this piece of paper during your internship when these issues arise before work. Feel free to upload a PDF.
