Supertubos! (Intern Edition)

A fishing town in Portugal has a very famous beach. It is where monster waves come right up to the beach before crashing. There are few places in the world that rival Peniche. Some incredible barrels there lead to surfing so good the beach is worthy of an international competition held annually. Never heard of it? I assume you haven’t. I hadn’t either until recently. After all, there are millions of beaches around the world. Sometimes someone has to tell you about something spectacular so you can discover it.

Discover

There are over 2.4 billion Instagram users with over a quarter accessing it every day. Though quite the social media platform, as someone in his 50’s it hadn’t appealed much to me. The vast majority of users are between the ages of 18 and 34. Few people my age talk about it. So, though it is amazing no one has been sharing with me about it. Similarly, no one has shared with you about Supertubos beach in Peniche, have they?

Enter intern phenom Hector Betanzos: “You know, we could create an Instagram channel and host short videos that get the message out about bringing dignity to the internship discourse? It will reach millions.” My first thought upon hearing this was that sounds like a dream wrapped in a deep barrel soon to crash on shore. But then, I remember how I tell clients and business partners to challenge assumptions and dig deeper into questions to solve problems. Be curious. Explore. Discover. How else will one know what works? Discovering for yourself is the best way to grow. Maybe you feel that truth for yourself today? I do.

Intern versus Manager

The Supertubos of Instagram is Intern versus Manager. Here, Hector and I playfully act out the differences in perspective between interns and managers. This is a series that will entertain and educate you with short clips that will make you laugh as you learn what it takes to bring dignity to the internship discourse. How many ways do you think interns behave differently from their managers? The possibilities are as limitless as surf runs. We are excited about this endeavor.

Beaches and Followers

We are aiming to get our first 10,000 followers on our way to 100,000. To incentivize you to follow Intern versus Manager and forward it on to one friend, I am giving Hector a penny for every follower added by next Wednesday. That would be $1,000 for our most recent intern sensation. It can happen, but only with your assistance.

Follow and play with us. We are having more fun discovering how to bring dignity to the internship discourse than we would surfing Bondi Beach in Australia. Really.

Here's to you and your awesome future.

Until then, keep your feet on the board and keep riding your wave!
